Beginning in November, 2002, Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church established a Sunday School. The goal of the Sunday
School is to help parents in the formation of their Children in the
spirit of Christ and the Orthodox Church.
The School is small right now.
We began with six children in attendance, three assigned teachers
and some assistants. In consultation with the Department of
Religious Education of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, we have
purchased materials for an age-adjusted curriculum. In addition, we
have purchased supplies for crafts and other projects associated
with the lessons.
The classes meet in a large
airy and well lighted building, which has served as a dining room in
the past.
The children attend the Divine
Liturgy with their parents. Before Holy Communion is offered the
Priest talks to the children for a few minutes, giving them a
message from the Bible, the traditions of the Orthodox Church, or
from contemporary life. Following Holy Communion, the children leave
Church with the teachers and assistants and go to the hall for their
lesson. Each child receives some cookies and juice before the lesson
begins.
When the Divine Liturgy, the
Sermon and any occasional services (such as a memorial service), the
adults go to the Parish Hall for coffee and fellowship. When the
lesson is over, the children go to the Parish Hall to meet with
their parents.
In this way, we try to respond
to our Lord's command to proclaim the Gospel, beginning with our own
children and grandchildren.
