ST. BASIL THE GREAT – ONE OF THE POTENTIAL NAMES OF OUR CHURCH

ST. BASIL THE GREAT, ARCHBISHOP OF CAESAREA (330-379) was raised by parents of unusual devotion in the province of Cappadocia in Asia Minor. Basil and his five brothers and sisters were raised in Christian piety by their parents, and grew to be priests, nuns, and bishops. All became saints of Orthodoxy in the fourth century.

Educated in Athens and Constantinople, Basil distinguished himself as a person of intellect and of spiritual accomplishment as a monk. In a time of crisis, he was ordained Bishop of Caesarea, with the task of defending the Orthodox Faith against heretics.

Among his accomplishments was that he established the written rules for monasticism, and he formalized the Divine Liturgy for the Church out of several traditions. St. Basil’s liturgy is celebrated ten times each year, including Christmas and Basil’s feast day of January 1st, when he died. Basil created orphanages, hospitals, and homes for the elderly as a practical outreach of brotherly love. This later led to the formation of Christian philanthropic societies. Basil was also a great preacher and teacher. He wrote many books against false teachers, a famous book on the Holy Spirit and many commentaries on various books of the Holy Bible, including the six days of Creation.

(Read) You who were lifted on the Cross voluntarily, / O Christ our God, / bestow Your tender compassion / upon Your new community / to which You gave your name.

EPISTLE  (Leave-Taking of the Elevation of the Cross) –  Galatians 2:16-20 + Brethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

GOSPEL (Leave-Taking of the Elevation of the Cross) –  Mark 8:34-9:1+ The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

In the Place of “Axion Esti” the Leaders sing in Greek “O dia broseos tou xylou

Translation: Truly, death which befell the human race by eating from the tree, has been abolished today by the Cross; for the curse of the first mother and all her descendents has be undone by Him who was born of the all-pure Theotokos, whom all the powers of heaven magnify.

In the Place of the Communion Hymn “Praise the Lord” (sing) in Greek “Eseimiothe ef’emas” and in English “Upon us shines” Hymnal, 91

In the Place of “We have seen the true light,” (sing) in Greek “Soson Kyrie ton laon Sou” and in English “O Your Cross do we venerate” Hymnal, 107.

MEN’S BREAKFAST CLUB-CURCH RELATED ACTIVITIES: The Men’s Breakfast club meets every Thursday morning. After breakfast, some of the members regularly do work around the church grounds. Among them George Nikas, Spiros Lemonides, Bill Pasisis and Paul Cosmadelis have been working on some Tuesdays and almost every Thursday at the church. A partial list of what they have done includes weeding flower beds, trenching around cabins, removing insulation and sheet rock from cabins, cleaning and rearranging the tool cabin, replacing a water heater in the dining hall, shoveling blue stone onto the driveway and replacing a fixture in the church office. Last Thursday, Costas Hronis joined the work force.

There is much more to do. Volunteers, both men and women, and all ages, are needed. Some examples of our needs are cleaning the lavatories and the halls, weeding and edging, pruning limbs, mowing areas not covered by contract. Arrangements can be made to do some of the work on days other than Thursdays. See George Nikas (597-1375) or Paul Cosmadelis (686-1199) for more information. Thanks to the Men’s Breakfast Club for this stewardship!
