THE NEW CHURCH YEAR – OUR GOALS!
September is the first month of the church or “ecclesiastical”
year. Beginnings are important,
because they set the tone for the rest of the year. So, it’s a
good time to ask
ourselves what Christ the Savior Church is all about -our
vision, our goals and the important things we seek to support.
We began our effort to become a parish of the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese early in 2002 with a petition to become a Mission
under the name “Hellenic Orthodox Mission of Hernando County.”
In the process, we developed a “Mission Statement.” This is our
mission:
The mission of Christ
the Savior Greek Orthodox Church, Brooksville, Florida, is to
serve the religious and spiritual needs of all Orthodox
Christians, converts, those of interfaith marriages and the 'unchurched'
living in Hernando County and especially, though not
exclusively, those whose mother tongue is English. Christ the
Savior Greek Orthodox Church is a Pan-Orthodox parish, and has
been designated a Mission Parish by the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of America – Metropolis of Atlanta under the
direction of His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios, Metropolitan of
Atlanta.
If you read this statement carefully, you will understand that
our goal is to help people come closer to the Lord. We seek to
achieve God’s goal for us to become more like Him. Our goal as
human beings and Christians is to fulfill the purpose for which
God created us – to be “the image and likeness of God.” As a
church, our primary goal is to help each and every
person to be connected with God as much as possible
through personal spiritual growth and the sacramental
life; through heartfelt and understandable worship
participation; through growth in understanding of the
Faith; through increasing love as a living and vital
Orthodox Christian community; and through outreach out to
others in Christ the Savior’s name. We seek to practice
loving care to those in need and to contribute to the true
welfare of the society in which we live. Our goal
is to be personally spiritual, authentically Christ’s church,
outreaching with His message, and philanthropic toward those in
need.
The fruits of this kind of church life are great for each of us
individually and for us all as a community of shared faith. In
his letter to the Galatians in the New Testament, St. Paul tells
us what these fruits of true church life are: “But the fruit
of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. . . . If we live by the
Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no
self-conceit, no provoking of one another, no envy of one
another” (Galatians 5:22-26).

EPISTLE –
Galatians 2:16-20 (Post-Elevation – 21st Sunday) + Brethren,
you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but
through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ
Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by
works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be
justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we
ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of
sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I
tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the
law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been
crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ
who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
GOSPEL – Mark
8:34-9:1 (Post-Elevation) + The Lord said: "If anyone wishes
to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and
follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and
whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save
it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and
forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his
life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this
adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man
also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with
the holy angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you,
there are some standing here who will not taste death before
they see the kingdom of God come with power."
