PRAYER IN THE DIVINE LITURGY

  Just what do we do when we go to Church for the Divine Liturgy on Sunday? Above all, we manifest the Church in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The purpose of the Divine Liturgy is to gather the Church to offer the Bread and Wine for consecration by the Holy Spirit, and for each and all of us to be united with Jesus Christ through communion of His Body and Blood.

  A famous Orthodox theologian once asked us to imagine a church on Sunday morning. The Priest came and went to the altar. The theologian asked, "Is the Priest the Church?" The answer is that alone, the Priest is not the Church. Then the Singers came. Again, the question, "Are the Singers and the Priest the Church?" "No" is the answer. Then the people come and fill the church. Together are the Priest, the Singers, and the People. Do we now have the Church? Again, "No" is the response. So, we look around us and see the icons of the Angels and Saints, reminding us of the Church of past ages. The "Church Triumphant" in heaven and the "Church Militant" on earth are seen as one. But this is still not the Church..

   Then, the Priest, the Singers, the People, in the midst of the Angels and Saints, begin the prayer and worship of the Divine Liturgy. Christ is now present in the midst of His Body. We commune with Christ in prayer, in worship, and above all, in the sharing of His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. Now, we ask once again, "Is this the Church?" And the answer is a resounding "Yes"!

   But there is another question that has to be added to this story. What if all these persons have gathered together and all have gone through the motions, words and hymns of the Divine Liturgy, but have not consciously prayed and worshipped and communed?

   Our theology tells us that as long as there is an intention to do so, even in the most undefined and unconscious way, the Church is still manifested in the Divine Liturgy. But, needless to say, it is not as rich, meaningful and as fully experienced as it would be if we pray in the Divine Liturgy with our bodies, minds and hearts fully. The very text of the Divine Liturgy illustrates this. About thirty times during the course of the Divine Liturgy

the words "Let us pray" are repeated.

   From the moment you enter the church and light your candle to when you leave the Liturgy with the blessed "antidoron bread" in your hand, prayer to God ought to be what dominates you. The next time you come to Church, give attention to the invitation "Let us pray." It will change your whole Sunday morning experience.

   EPISTLE – 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 (16th Sunday) +Brethren, working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation." Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in any one's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, tumults, labors, watching, hunger; by purity, knowledge, forbearance, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

   GOSPEL – Luke 7:11-16 (3rd Luke) + At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

This was followed by a description of a conditional offer to buy our property for $625,000 with the proviso that we be allowed to stay for an additional eight months without additional charge, with hoped-for settlement by the end of the year. Then, the proposals were voted on by the Assembly following discussion. It was voted:

  1) to authorize the Parish Council to negotiate offers on our property for $625,000 or more without recourse to another General Assembly (32 for; 2 against);

  2) to authorize the acceptance of the offer by the Parish Council of the 4.75 acre property on Anderson Snow Road for the building of our new church and hall without recourse to another General Assembly, when our present property is sold (32 for, 2 abstentions); and,

  3) to authorize, upon the sale of our Olympic Village lane property, a limited time and low key Building Fund drive, in the light of rising building costs (unanimous).
