SINGING THE LITURGY
Today, Sunday, October 6, 2002 is “National Church Music Sunday” in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. The purpose of this observance is to honor local choir members, cantors and other church musicians. SINCE OUR MISSION does not have a choir nor a cantor, because we all sing the responses of the Divine Liturgy together, the only category that might fit us is “other church musicians,” though I don’t that many of us think of ourselves as musicians. So what can this observance mean to us? Perhaps it can serve to focus our attention on what we are doing when we are singing the hymns of the Divine Liturgy each Sunday. IDEALLY, we make the words of the Psalmist our own: “I will sing praises to my God while I have my being” (Psalm 146:2). But, the danger is that we will be taken up by the singing, and not focus on the words, words which are prayers directed to the Lord. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION to the hymns of the Divine Liturgy, you will see that they are written precisely, as words of prayer being said by all The people attending the Divine Liturgy. Here a few examples: "Save us, O Son of God, who rose from the dead, to You we sing, Alleluia;" -"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us;" -"We who mystically represent the Cherubim sing the thrice holy hymn to the life giving Trinity.;" -"We praise You, we bless You, we give thanks to You, and we pray to You;" -"We have seen the true light; we have received the heavenly Spirit; we have found the true faith, worshiping the undivided Trinity, for the Trinity has saved us." These hymns presuppose that those saying them are offering prayers directed to the Lord. So, as you attend the Divine Liturgy, the words of the hymns are also yours. You should be fully conscious of the hymns as prayers that you are saying along with everyone else. With the Liturgy book in hand, you can repeat the words consciously and prayerfully so that you as you sing, you pray truthfully and personally, as a genuine participant in the Divine Liturgy. SING AND PRAY THE DIVINE LITURGY!
Service Hours: Sundays and Feast days: Orthros at 9:30 a.m.; Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. Evening Services as announced. =========================================================== 3re Sunday of Luke Saints: The Apostle Thomas of the Twelve; Righteous Kendeas, Righteous Makarios of Kion, Neomartyr (+1590); St. Innocent of Moscow, the Enlightener of the Aleuts. EPISTLE –2 Corinthians 4:6-15 Brethren, it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believed, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with for us with sighs too deep for words. And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. GOSPEL –Luke 7:11-16 At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"
