CHRIST THE SAVIOR – PRESENTATION AT THE TEMPLE

ONE OF THE POSSIBLE NAMES FOR OUR CHURCH

THE PRESENTATION AT THE TEMPLE. Presenting a child to God forty days after its birth originated in the Jewish faith and continues in Orthodoxy. Symeon was directed by the Holy Spirit to receive Jesus in the Temple on the day Mary and Joseph brought Him to the Temple. The Holy Spirit told him, “that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” And Symeon said, “Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word for my eyes have seen Your salvation.” Then Anna, who was a prophetess and a widow of about 84 years of age, saw Jesus, “and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” In this way the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, was proclaimed as the fulfillment of all the prophesies regarding the Messiah. This feast is a joyous affirmation of the love of God for all humanity. We are reminded of it whenever a child is “churched.” The Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple is celebrated on February 2 each year.

Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, / who always intercedes for those who honor you.

EPISTLE - 2 Corinthians 6:1-10 + Brethren, godly grief produces a repentance that leads to

salvation and brings no regret, but worldly grief produces death. For see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves guiltless in the matter. So although I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong, nor on account of the one who suffered the wrong, but in order that your zeal for us might be revealed to you in the sight of God. Therefore we are comforted. And besides our own comfort we rejoiced still more at the joy of Titus, because his mind has been set at rest by you all. For if I have expressed to him some pride in you, I was not put to shame; but just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting before Titus has proved true. And his heart goes out all the more to you, as he remembers the obedience of you all, and the fear and trembling with which you received him. I rejoice, because I have perfect confidence in you.

GOSPEL – Luke 6:31-36+ The Lord said, As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.  And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

Stewards! On Sunday, October 19, 2003, after Church, an important informational meeting on “The Future of Our Mission” will be held. A luncheon will be served free of charge for all Stewards and spouses attending. It will help us all understand the implications of our ownership of our property for the future.  We will describe the alternatives we face, and the costs.

Each person will receive a “Workbook” with clear descriptions of the choices we have regarding the future. No decisions will be made at this meeting, but the subject of our future will be acted upon at the General Assembly scheduled for November 2.

Please Set Aside October 19 to Prepare for Decisions Regarding Our Future!

METROPOLITAN NIKETAS (LULIAS) OF HONG KONG, a Tarpon Springs native, will be making a presentation on the topic “Orthodox Missions in Southeast Asia” at the new St. Nicholas Cathedral Community Center this Tuesday evening, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. We will try to arrange rides for those interested in going for the presentation. If you wish to attend, please speak to Connie Mourgides after Liturgy, so arrangements can be made today. Fr. Stanley and Presbytera Emily are planning to attend. It should be very interesting!

YOU CAN FEED THE HUNGRY: The Church Council has voted that we try to step up the frequency of our efforts to feed the hungry families in our area. That means we need more frequent donations of  packaged foods. Please bring something to the food pantry weekly!

GARAGE SALE ITEMS: Pack up those “hidden treasures” and bring them to the Dining Hall (no clothing). We are collecting for our forth-coming Garage sale. If the Hall is locked, leave the items on the porch: furniture, toys, appliances, tools, electronics, etc.

HOSPITALIZED: Oak Hill: Francis Aphrodite. Spring Hill Regional: Kara Hazivasilis. We pray for a rapid recovery. Let Fr. Stanley know when a family member is hospitalized.

REMEMBER to make your Stewardship of Treasure on a regular basis. Thank you!

GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF OUR MISSION: Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the General Assembly on Sunday, November 2, following Church services. Important decisions will be made: regarding the future of our Mission, nominations of Council Members, Financial Reports, and issues regarding the good of the Mission. Stewards in attendance will have voice and vote. Non-Stewards may attend without voice or vote.
