Praying the Christmas Lent
The
Christmas fast has as its goal our growth in the Christian life. What
should you do during the fast period to help you move in the direction
of that goal?
l
Fast! The Church calls us to abstain from certain foods during
this period. Fast at least from meat. That's the most familiar aspect of
fasting. But there are others, as well.
l
Examine Yourself Spiritually! Take time to assess your life
especially in relation to the Lord, your family, your Church Community,
your spiritual and material Stewardship as a servant of Christ.
l
Worship! Increase your church attendance for worship,
inspiration, learning and above all, Holy Communion.
l
Repent! Acknowledging your sins, repenting for them and seeking
to grow in God’s image and likeness. We are especially aided in this,
through the Sacrament of Holy Confession.
l
Love! Look for ways to express love for those in need,
physically, financially, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Make a
conscious effort to be a more loving person.
l
Forgive! Get rid of resentment against those who have wronged you
and forgive them from your heart. At the same time ask for forgiveness
of those you have harmed.
l
And prayer! Without prayer, none of those things will ever be
accomplished. By increasing the frequency and depth of your communion
with our Lord, you make it possible for God to become more readily
present in your life.
l Three
Prayers! Here are three prayers you can say daily during the
Christmas Lent. The first is the Lord's Prayer, about which St.
Kassianos said, "The 'Our Father' prayer contains all the
fullness of perfection, inasmuch as the Lord himself has given it to us,
both as a model and also as a precept. Those who are familiar with this
prayer are raised by it to a very lofty condition."
The second prayer appropriate to the Christmas Lent is the Jesus
Prayer. Say it frequently throughout the day, "Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."
The third prayer, from our pre-Christmas services, is
"May the practice of the virtues be adequate in the treasury of our
hearts, that, with faces enlightened, we may sing to the infant Christ,
'All you works of the Lord, bless the Lord'. Amen.”
This year, make the Christmas Lent a spiritual reality. Fast;
Worship; Repent; Love; Forgive; and Pray!

EPISTLE –Ephesians 2:14-22
(24th Sunday) BRETHREN, Christ is our peace, who has
made us both one, and has broken down the diving wall of hostility, by
abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he
might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making
peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross,
thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace
to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through
him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no
longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the
saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of
the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy
temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling
place of God in the Spirit.
GOSPEL –Luke 1:18-27
(13th Luke) At that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked
him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus
said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You
know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not
steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And
he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard
it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have
and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and
come, follow me." But when he heard this he became sad, for he was very
rich. Jesus looking at him said, "How hard it is for those who have
riches to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go
through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of
God." Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?" But he said,
"What is impossible with men is possible with God."
