THE “STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE”

L

ast Saturday, at the airport on my way to Atlanta, I purchased a cup of coffee from a famous coffee stand. The price of the coffee was $1.50. I remembered a story told to me by a fellow priest. This is the story. What if Jesus met you in a restaurant and asked to share a cup of coffee? Would you pay for His coffee? No doubt, you would. What if Jesus met you every day and you shared a cup of coffee with Him, would you pay for it? Most Christians would. Few would refuse Jesus a dollar and a half a day. Of course, the Lord gives us much, much more. If we buy the coffee, it is He who provides our meals

 . . . and our blessings of life . .  . and resources . . . and material and spiritual blessings . . . even life itself!

There are people who complain that the Church is always asking for money. They are right. From the very beginning, monetary collections have been made for the Church. In the New Testament we read how St. Paul made a collection for the persecuted Christians in Jerusalem from the Gentile Churches he had established. He said, "The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

There are four things to note about this passage. First, when we give to the Lord’s work, we receive blessings in return proportionate to our generosity. Secondly, that means we should give proportionately, Thirdly, we should give cheerfully and freely. Finally, our giving helps do the good work of the Lord.

YOU WILL SOON HAVE THE CHANCE to offer your gift to the Lord, that will reflect the blessings that you have received. A Steward of the Hellenic Orthodox Mission of Hernando County is a person who makes a good faith declaration that he or she will offer to the Lord, freely, without compulsion, and lovingly, a gift of  Time, Talent and Treasure. Your gift returns to the Lord a tiny fraction of the blessings you now enjoy in your life. The Lord has provided the meal. You are asked to pay for the coffee!

EPISTLE Galatians 2:16-20
B
RETHREN, you know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

GOSPEL  Luke 12:16-21

T

he Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
