 THE ORTHODOX LENTEN PRAYER

T

omorrow, March 10, begins Great Lent in our Orthodox Church. It is a period of spiritual endeavor. It is a time for fasting, to strengthen our resolve and devotion; it is a time for increased prayer and church attendance; it is a time for increased loving service for others in need; it is a time when we seek to orient ourselves away from “the world” to the spiritual life. By doing this, we sanctify these holy days and commit them and our lives more fully to Christ. We seek to cleanse our bodies, minds and spirits so that we can be prepared during the Great and Holy Week to relive the final events of Christ on earth. We will liturgically be present at the Last Supper. We will witness with the eyes of our soul, the Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus. We will witness the His Crucifixion and Burial. And we will rejoice at His Life-giving Resurrection at Pascha on April 27. Our Church calls us to pray daily the following Lenten Prayer of St. Ephraim:

O LORD and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, despondency, lust of power, and idle talk; But grant rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to your servant.   Yes Lord and King, grant me to see my own faults and sins, and not to judge my brother, for You are blessed to the ages of ages. Amen.

EPISTLE: Hebrews 12:1-10

rethren, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? -- "My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives." It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?  If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time at their pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness.

GOSPEL: Matthew 6:14-21

T

he Lord said, If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
