FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT – ST. MARY OF EGYPT
t. Mary of Egypt
was born around 344 A.D. and died about the year 421. At the
age of twelve, she left home and went to Alexandria, Egypt to
become a prostitute. After seventeen years, she heard about a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Exaltation of the
Holy Cross. She joined the pilgrims, not for religious
reasons, but to use the time on the ship to practice her
sinful way of life. When she arrived in Jerusalem, she joined
the pilgrims as they went to the Holy Sepulcher for the Feast.
But as she followed the
pilgrims and reached the door of the church, she was stopped
in her tracks, as if a hand was pushing her away. Repeatedly
rebuffed, she went to the opposite corner of the church yard.
All of sudden, she felt deep repentance for the wicked life
she had been living. This, she understood, was the reason she
was pushed away from the sacred Church.
Hot tears of repentance
poured from her eyes and she lamented her sins. She prayed
that the Lord forgive her sins and with faith, humbly
requested that she be allowed to enter the Church and venerate
the Cross of Christ with the other pilgrims. In return, she
promised that she would renounce her sinful ways and dedicate
her life in repentance to God. With reverence, she then moved
to the door. No invisible hand prevented her entrance. After
venerating the Holy Cross, went to the Church of St. John the
Baptist and received Holy Communion.
Then, she left Jerusalem,
crossed the Jordan River, and went into the inhospitable
Palestinian desert to live a life of deep devotion to her
Savior Jesus Christ, having as her intercessor, her namesake,
the Virgin mother of our Lord, Mary. She lived all alone in
the desert for forty-seven years. She ate only herbs from the
scarce vegetation available there.
In those places, it was custom for priests and monks to
spend Great Lent in the desert, alone. One of these persons,
named Zosimos, saw her and engaged her in conversation.
Mary, because of her deep spiritual insight, called Zosimos
by his name and recognized him as a Priest, and told him her
remarkable story. After they had conversed and prayed
together, she asked the Priest to come to the desert again
and administer Holy Communion to her, which he did. Then she
asked him to come again a year later. When he did, he found
her dead. He buried her body where she had lived, in the
desert. Her relics were then preserved as sources of grace.
The Church presents her today to us as a model of
repentance, prayer and devotion.

You have always protected those who honor you!

EPISTLE
– Hebrews 9:11-14
(5th Sunday of Lent)
rethren, when Christ
appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come,
then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with
hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all
into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves
but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if
the sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and
bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the
purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of
Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without
blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to
serve the living God.
GOSPEL –
Mark 10:32-45
(5th Sunday of
Lent)
t
that time, Jesus taking
the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to
him, saying, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the
Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the
scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him
to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him,
and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will
rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward
to him, and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us
whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you
want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to
sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your
glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are
asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be
baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they
said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup
that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I
am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand
or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for
whom it has been prepared." And when the ten heard it, they
began to be indignant of James and John. And Jesus called them
to him and said to them, "You know that those who are supposed
to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great
men exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among
you; but whoever would be great among you must be your
servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of
all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to
serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."
