A BIT OF CHURCH HUMOR FOR THE SUMMER

There was a little old lady, who every morning. stepped onto her front porch, raised her arms to the sky, and shouted: "Praise the Lord!" One day an atheist moved into the house next door. He became irritated at the little old lady.  Every morning he'd step onto his front porch after her and yell: "There is no Lord!"  Time passed with the two of them carrying on this way every day.  One morning, in the middle of winter, the little old lady stepped onto her front porch and shouted: "Praise the Lord!  Please Lord, I have no food and I am starving, provide for me, oh Lord!" The next morning she stepped onto her porch and there were two big bags of groceries sitting there. "Praise the Lord!" she cried out.  "He has provided groceries for me!" The atheist neighbor jumped out of the hedges and shouted:  "There is no Lord. I bought those groceries!!" The little old lady threw her arms into the air and shouted: "Praise the Lord!  He has provided me with groceries and made the Devil pay for them!

CHURCH SIGNS

 1. There was a church that had problems with outsiders  parking in its parking lots, so they put up a sign:  CHURCH CAR PARK - FOR MEMBERS ONLY,  TRESPASSERS WILL BE BAPTIZED!  That took care of the problem!
 2. "No God - No Peace?   Know God - Know Peace."
 3. "Free Trip to heaven.   Details Inside!"
 4. "Try our Sundays. They are better than Baskin-Robbins."
 5. "Searching for a new look?   Have your faith lifted here!"
 6. An ad for one Church has a picture of two hands holding stone tablets on which the Ten Commandments are inscribed and a headline that reads:  "For fast, fast, fast relief, take two tablets."
 7. When the restaurant next to another Church put out a sign with big red letters that said, "Open Sundays," the church reciprocated with its own message: "We are open on Sundays, too."
 8. "People are like tea bags - you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are."
 9. "Fight truth decay - study the Bible daily."
 10. "How will you spend eternity - Smoking or Non-smoking?"
 11. "Dusty Bibles lead to Dirty Lives"
 12. "Come work for the Lord.   The work is hard, the hours are long and the pay is low.  But the retirement benefits are out of this world."
 13. "It is unlikely there'll be a reduction in the wages of sin."
 14. "Do not wait for the hearse to take you to church."
 15. "If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns."
 16. "If you don't like the way you were born, try being born again."
 17. "Looking at the way some people live, they ought to obtain eternal fire insurance soon."
 18. "This is a ch_ _ ch.   What is missing?" ----- (U R)
 19. "In the dark?   Follow the Son."
 20. "Running low on faith?   Step in for a fill-up."

Kontakion sung by leaders in Greek “Prostasia ton Christianon. . .”

(Read)  O never-failing protectress of Christians / and their ever-present intercessor before the Creator: / do not be heedless to the prayerful voices of us sinners, / but in your goodness extend your help to us / who call upon you with confidence. / Hasten, O Mother of God, / to intercede for us. / You have always protected those who honor you!

Return to p. 26 of the Hymnal, to sing “Holy God . . . .”

EPISTLE – Romans 2:10-16 (2nd  Matthew) + Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL – Matthew 4:18-23 (2nd Matthew) + At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left their boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

It will take just an hour or two a month of your time. The cards, stamps and names/addresses will be provided by the church.    PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The Parish Council of Christ the Savior Church met on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, with President Gloria Vardakis, presiding. Following the call to order and the prayer, a discussion of the article “What Are Parish Councils For?” took place. Bill Pasisis volunteered to take the minutes in the absence of Recording Secretary Feenie Ferriero. George Nikas gave the treasurer’s reporting that a new CD had been obtained so that we could get a better interest rate. A meeting was arranged with our new Bookkeeper in order to set up the reporting procedure. The new Parish Council members, Carol Gymnaos, Nick Maroulis and Helen Vangel, will attend the Parish Council Seminar. After that, their names will be submitted to the Metropolis for approval. When that takes place, they will be sworn in. In the meantime, Nick Maroulis accepted to serve as co-chair of the Facilities Committee in the absence of Connie Pappas. Also, Carol Gymnaos has accepted to chair the Grounds Committee. Work has been scheduled to clean, paint and repair the house prior to renting. Also, the debris from the recent roof repairs will be removed and disposed of along with cutting of the grass. Bill Pasisis reported that we now have 67 Stewardship households, with 103 voting Stewards. Bill also reported on forthcoming Fund Raising activities. A Sunday, August 20 Barbeque is in the planning stages and a Sunday, September 24 Spaghetti and Meatballs Luncheon is being planned. The new co-chairs of the Planning & Building Committee were appointed: Paul Cosmadelis and Nick Kastelan. Bill Pasisis will serve as the Parish Council liaison with the Planning & Building Committee. It was announced that Architect Alex Nomikos would prepare “Flat Drawings” of our proposed new church and hall building. The Parish Council was informed that the Men’s Club will suspend meetings for the time being.

Fr. Stanley announced his vacation plans: He and Presbytera Emily would leave on Friday, July 7 and return on Sunday evening, July 16. Then they will leave again on Saturday July 22 and return Saturday, July 29. Fr. Jerry has accepted to serve the Liturgy on July 9, 16 and 23. Bulletins will be prepared in advance. The “2006-2007 Telephone  Directory” has been published with an income of $3300 from the advertisements. Copies of the Directory have been mailed, or will be hand-delivered by Mike Triantafilon to all commercial advertisers. The next meeting was scheduled for Wednesday, August 16, 2006, at 7:30 p.m.

PLANNING AND BUILDING COMMITTEE: Planning & Building Committee met on June 13, 2006, the minutes being reported by Bill Pasisis, Parish Council Liaison member. Present were Nick Kastelan,, Paul Cosmadelis, John Tsauusis, Bill Pasisis, George  Nikas, Parish Council President, Gloria Vardakis and  the Architect Alex Nomikos. Absent were Fr.Stanley, Nick Maroulis and Charles Chronopoulos. Alex brought back the drawings with the changes made at the previous meeting. Alex started off in the Church area with adjustments to the Iconostasis’ position and the door  openings of the Vestries. Nick pointed out the desire for the Vestry doors to open inward. Some  other changes were made behind the Altar to fit the needs of  Fr. Stanley and the Altar Servers. They were not drastic changes that would  affect  the cost  in any way. The  Church  windows  were narrowed down to 20 inches wide and set  at 48 inches off the floor.  Obstructed glass would  be  used to reduce the glare. With no other  changes  to the drawings , Alex will  return   with the noted changes  at our next meeting. Date pending. Nick Kastelan   brought  us up to date on the cottage repairs. Carol Gymnaos’  husband  is going to paint the walls  & ceilings. The paint was purchased and donated by Nick Maroulis. The rug has been cleaned.   An  issue  came up of the replacements of  2 doors in the cottage   and  whether that was included in the  cost of  the  church  & bathroom roofs .Debris,  rubbish  and building materials left behind by the handy man needs to be removed.  Some  fallen  trees by the trailer need to be removed. The newspaper dumpster will be replaced with a more attractive one. Though our property is listed “sell as is” with the realtors, the cosmetic improvement at minimal cost will make it more attractive to a prospective buyer.

CHURCH PROPERTY BEING SHOWN: There has been a good amount of interest in the church property, which has been and is being shown by six or seven interested realtors. We are hoping that we will receive some offers in the near future. In the meantime, as noted above, the planning for the new church complex is proceeding apace. Should an offer be received, a Special General Assembly will be called to consider it. Otherwise, the next General Assembly is being planned for October 15. Please reserve the date.
