PENTECOST AND FATHER'S DAY
June brings two celebrations and both
are observed on the same day this year, 2008: Pentecost and Father’s
Day.
Pentecost, the birth of the Church, made the disciples of our Lord,
apostles, commissioned to go out and continue the work of Christ, being
spiritual fathers to the world. They were filled with the power of the
Holy Spirit, which gave them strength and endurance for their mighty
task. They unselfishly gave their whole lives to the Lord.
Pentecost comes, therefore, each year to remind us that by ourselves we
are empty, that we were filled at the time of our baptism with the
Spirit of God giving us power. On the day of Pentecost, at the
conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, we will kneel three times to renew our
commitment to the Holy Spirit and pray for the continued infilling of
the Holy Spirit and that the Spirit will continue to give our lives
power. Power to turn the barrenness of the soul into a garden of beauty;
power to resist the onslaught of sin; power to bear the burdens of each
day; power to outlast the storm; power to stand up for that which is
right; power to forgive; power to love; and power to achieve the final
victory: everlasting life in the Kingdom of God.
This is the power we will pray for when we kneel on the Day of
Pentecost and it should be our prayer every day, since through prayer
every day can be a Pentecost as we invite the Holy Spirit to fill us
with His presence and power.
The spiritual fathers continued the work of Christ and physical
fathers do the same. Since June is the month to honor Fathers, this
issue of the bulletin is dedicated to all fathers, grandfathers, and
godfathers of our parish family. I am generous to them because “there
are few to sing their praises and in every song and story; it is
sweethearts, wives and mothers who attain the fame and glory.” Beloved
fathers, relax, because this is your equal time and opportunity, for we
know “how sad it is that one so worthy, so deserving of our mention, is
so seldom given homage and receives such scant attention.”
Yes, fathers, whoever you are, this is your day! Rejoice in it and
all the days of your life. We are fully aware that you are the ones
“faced with problems never-ending, uncomplaining, never daring to relax
your toil and striving, ever-giving and always sharing.”
We salute you on Father’s Day and we pray that your reward lies in the
pleasure which the years of serving love bring. We assure you that to
those of us who love you dearly, each one of you is the uncrowned king.

EPISTLE –
Acts 2:1-11 (Pentecost)
hen the day
of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly
a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled
all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them
tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in
Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this
sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because
each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed
and wondered, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And
how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians
and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia, Pontos and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts
of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and
proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own
tongues the mighty works of God."
GOSPEL – John 7:37-52, 8:12
(Pentecost)
n the last day of the
feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, "If any one thirst,
let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture
has said, 'Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.'" Now
this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to
receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not
yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said,
"This is really the prophet." Others said, "This is the Christ." But
some said, "Is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture
said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem,
the village where David was?" So there was a division among the people
over him. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on
him. The officers then went back to the chief
priest and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" The
officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" The Pharisees
answered them, "Are you led astray, you also? Have any of the
authorities or of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd, who do
not know the law, are accursed." Nikodemos, who had gone to him before,
and who was one of them, said to them, "Does our law judge a man without
first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?" They replied,
"Are you from Galilee too? Search and you will see that no prophet is to
rise from Galilee." Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light
of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have
the light of life."
In the place of “Truly it is proper” Hymnal 54-56, the leaders
sing “Me tis fthoras”
Read: O Mother who has known no man, / you did not
conceive experiencing marital relations, / lending a body to the Word, /
the Creator of all, / you became a receptacle to your gracious Creator,
/ and a dwelling place for your incomprehensible Maker. / Wherefore, O
virgin Theotokos, / you do we magnify.
In the place of the Communion Hymn “Praise the Lord” Hymnal,
66, the leaders sing “To Pnevma Sou to agathon . . .”
Read Your Good Spirit shall guide me on level ground.
Alleluia!
In the place of “We have seen the light” Hymnal, 70, we
sing the Dismissal Hymn for Pentecost. Sing in English ("O
blessed are You"). Hymnal, 115.
PENTECOST VESPERS: Following the Divine Liturgy and a brief
