THE TWO WEEK FAST OF THE DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS On Thursday, August 1, this coming week, we begin the two week fast period in preparation for the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, on August 15.
Regarding the Mother of our Lord, the Theotokos, tradition tells that when she was dying, all of the Disciples who were at work at various distant places proclaiming the Gospel and establishing local Churches, were drawn back to Jerusalem to be present for death and funeral. All but one, the Apostle Thomas. She ended her life in holiness and sanctity. That is why her feast is usually named “Dormition” (in Greek, “KEE-mee-sis”), or literally, “The Falling Asleep” reflecting a teaching of the Bible that speaks of the Christian’s death as being asleep, until the Second Coming, to rise to Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:13). Another pious tradition says that after the Theotokos had been buried, Thomas arrived and asked to see her body. When the tomb was opened, the body was not to be found! She was assumed bodily into heaven! While none of the hymns of the feast reflect this tradition, popular piety in some places speaks of “The Assumption of the Theotokos,” and some Churches even bear this name. This period of fasting is also a period of more frequent prayer and worship with several services scheduled. We will conduct , on Thursdays, August 1 and August 8, as well as after the Divine Liturgy on Sundays August 4 and August 11, the Supplicatory Service to the Theotokos (“Paraklesis”). Books with the English text, which we will sing together, will be in the pews. Also, there will be two mid-week Divine Liturgies. On August 6, we will commemorate the feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord, and on August 15, the Feast of the Dormition. Come and worship on these holy days and make the Dormition Fast an opportunity for your spiritual renewal and growth!
