The Orthodox Messenger Vol. I, No. 27 – Sunday, July 21, 2002 Hellenic Orthodox Mission of Hernando County “A Pan-Orthodox Christian Community” Ecumenical Patriarchate + Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America + Diocese of Atlanta Services Held at St. Nicholas Chapel, 13460 Olympic Village Lane, Brooksville, FL - (352) 796-8482 The Hellenic Orthodox Mission Website: http://worship.nu/hellenicorthodoxmission/index.htm FR. STANLEY S. HARAKAS, PROTOPRESBYTER - (352) 688-2382 (Afternoons and Evenings)
Members of our Mission Parish are called Stewards. What does it mean to be a "Steward" and to practice "Stewardship?" These words describe a way of referring to our identity as Orthodox Christians. A steward is entrusted with certain responsibilities for the management of something. Think of a fine restaurant that has its own wine cellar. The "Wine Steward" of the restaurant is responsible for stocking the wines, maintaining them in the right position and temperature, and making them available to the serving staff. A "good wine steward" is one who fulfills his tasks responsibly and conscientiously. The Bible also speaks of stewardship. But there, stewardship is about the Christian life. In the Church we talk about being good stewards of the blessings and gifts that God has given us. Part of living in response to God's loving giving to us, is to use what He has given us in His service. We return to Him a small portion of His blessings. Among God's gifts to you are the blessings of life, talents, abilities, and material resources. That is why every Orthodox Christian is expected to be a steward of "Time," "Talent," and "Treasure." To be an Orthodox Christian Steward of time means that a portion of each day or hour is properly committed to God's purposes. Taking time for Sunday worship at Church is an example. Orthodox Christian Stewardship of your talents means that you don't use them just for yourself, but also for the good of others, including your parish and the whole Church. Contributing financially and generously according to your ability, to your Parish and to those in need means that you are practicing your stewardship of treasure. Being a Steward is a three-fold way of living your faith. So you see, these three kinds of stewardship include every aspect of your life. And every aspect of your life can and should express your Orthodox Faith. As a Christian, you are a Steward. The question is, are you a Good Steward? If you’ve made your pledge, are you up to date? If you haven’t pledged yet, you can do it today!
Service Hours: Sundays and Feast days: Orthros at 9:30 a.m.; Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. Evening Services as announced.

EPISTLE – ROMANS 6:18-23 Brethren, having been set free from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
GOSPEL - MATTHEW 8:5-13 At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching him an saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress." And he said to him, "I will come and heal him." But the centurion answered him, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this,' and he does it." When Jesus heard him, he marveled, and said to those who followed him, "Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth."And to the centurion Jesus said, "Go; be it done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed at that very moment. GOSPEL ENTRANCE HYMNSDismissal Hymn – 3rd Tone(Sing in Greek before the Entrance) (“Efrainestho ta Ourania”). Hymnal, 83-84.
