The Orthodox Messenger Vol. II, No. 27 – Sunday, July 13, 2003 “A Pan-Orthodox Christian Community” Ecumenical Patriarchate + Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America + Metropolis of Atlanta Services Held at St. Nicholas Chapel, 13460 Olympic Village Lane, Brooksville, FL - (352) 796-8482 Fr. Stanley S. Harakas, Protopresbyter – (352) 688-2382; Cell (352) 263-3005; Fax (352) 688-9846; OUR METROPOLIS CLERGY-LAITY ASSEMBLY
The Assembly was presided over by His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios and ably assisted by the Metropolis Chancellor, Fr. George Tsahakis. A joint local committee from the two parishes organized a very successful, smoothly run, and enjoyable event. The spirit of the Assembly was inspired by the theme of “Unity and Love” that permeated every aspect of the conference. Clergy and laity worked together on committees, made and discussed reports, shared in beautifully presented and served meals by the Hilton Charlotte and Towers Hotel staff, and rejoiced in the large number of successful Metropolis programs from Religious Education and Youth Programs to an inspiring presentation on the newly acquired 222 acre retreat center in the Carolinas. It was a full, inspiring, progressive, exciting and encouraging Assembly! His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios set the tone expressing a spirit of joy, fellowship and enthusiasm throughout out the Assembly events, which was conveyed to all in attendance. During these busy days, however, His Eminence and Fr. Tsahakis kindly devoted about three quarters of an hour to a conversation with Fr. Stanley and Presbytera Emily, who attended the Assembly as observers. They learned about the recent developments of our mission, the property, the increase in membership, the search for our future direction, and the plans for the naming of our community. His Eminence and Fr. Tsahakis asked many questions, expressed congratulations and support for our efforts. Most importantly, we were directed to the Metropolis Committee on Facilities and Development, for free consultations. The Committee is composed of experts in the area of land, building, finance and development of local parishes. After our church prepares itself, a one day meeting can be arranged so that experienced professionals can assist us in moving toward the future. We shared the plans for the naming of our community and both the Metropolitan and the Chancellor made valuable suggestions for our work. We received their blessings to continue our growth and development, and in return, we expressed deep appreciation for their support. Kontakion “Prostasia ton Christianon”(Sung in Greek by Leaders) Translation: O never-failing protectress of Christians / and their ever-present intercessor before the Creator: do not be heedless to the prayerful voices of us sinners, but in your goodness extend your help to us who call upon you with confidence. Hasten, O Mother of God, to intercede for us. You have always protected those who honor you! Return to a page 26 for “Holy God”and for the Epistle and Gospel Readings EPISTLE (For the Feast) – Titus 3:8-15 + Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicos to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greeting to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. GOSPEL (For the Feast) – Matthew 5:14-19 + The Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
