THE
BAPTISM OF CHRIST- EPIPHANY
THIS PAST WEEK
the Orthodox Church observed
the Feast of Epiphany, which commemorates the Baptism of
Christ in the Jordan River. For the first time in the four
year history of our Mission, at the instruction of His
Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios, we will observe this Feast
also, today, the Sunday After Epiphany with the Greater
Water Blessing Service. Until now, we have conducted the
Lesser Water Blessing Service on the day before Epiphany,
and then joined in the celebration at the Cathedral in
Tarpon Springs and the diving for the Cross in Spring Bayou.
This we did, with the special visit of Patriarch
Bartholomew.
THE BAPTISM OF JESUS was
a very special. Known also as “Theophany” this feast
commemorates the baptism of Christ in the Jordan river by
St. John the Baptist. It was a "Theophany" (a "showing of
God") because the Bible tells us that as Jesus Christ was
coming up out of the waters of the Jordan River, a voice was
heard saying "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased" and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the form
of a dove. In Christ's baptism, the belief that the One God
is also a Holy Trinity, was revealed.
The Dismissal Hymn
of Epiphany summarizes the Feast: "As you were
baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, then was the worship of the
Trinity made manifest, for the voice of the Father bore
witness to You, naming You the Beloved Son; and the Spirit,
the form of a dove, confirmed the certainty of the word. O
Christ God, who appeared and illumined the world, glory to
You.
From the last sentence of the hymn you can understand why
the Feast of the Baptism of Christ is also called the "Feast
of Lights" ("Ta Phota"). Through it the world was
illumined to learn of the One God who is a Trinity of
persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Feast of Theophany is celebrated with "The Great
Water Blessing," in which water is sanctified. The
church building, the icons and altar, and the worshipers are
sprinkled with the Holy Water. Parishioners are invited to
take the Holy Water home and sprinkle their own homes, or
invite the Priest to bless their homes.
Recently, the blessing of waters has taken on
ecological meaning. Our use of God's world should be to
sanctify it, not pollute it, a message strongly advocated by
Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who visited our
area this past Epiphany week.

EPISTLE –
Ephesians 4:7-13 (Sunday After Epiphany) + Brethren,
grace was given to each of us according to the measure of
Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on
high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men."
(in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had
also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who
descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens,
that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some
should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some
pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of
ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all
attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the
Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature
of the fullness of Christ.
GOSPEL – Matthew
4:12-17 (Sunday After Epiphany) + At that time, Jesus
heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee;
and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the
sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was
spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land
of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across
the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in
darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in
the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that
time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand."
