OUR CHURCH FEAST-THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST AT THE TEMPLE

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1 and AND WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 2

O

ur Church celebrates The “Presentation of Christ at the Temple” as our Feast Day. In the Gospel of Luke, 2:21-30 we read how Joseph and Mary brought the forty day old Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem as the first-born son to be brought to the Temple and presented, since, according to the Prophets, the Messiah was to be a first-born son. When they went there, the righteous Symeon, who had received a vision that he would not die until he saw the anointed one of the Lord, realized that Jesus was the Messiah. He took Jesus in his arms, and he declared “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” At the same time there was an aged Prophetess Anna who piously remained in the Temple, fasting and praying each day. When she saw Jesus, “she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.” We will honor this feast in a very special way this year.

On Tuesday, February 1, at 4:00 p.m. we will conduct the Vesper Service of the Presentation of Christ at the Temple. We have invited the Priests from the Tampa Bay area to join us in the Vespers. Frs. Murphy and Mattis will be the host Priests, and the Vicar of the Tampa Bay Conference, Fr. James Rousakis, will preside and preach the sermon. The Vesper Service has been published in English for all to participate. Following this, there will be Reception with a Pot-Luck Supper. Please attend and welcome our guests as we honor our Feast-Day. Plan to prepare a special dish for our Reception.

On Wednesday, February 2, the Orthros will be at 9:30 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 p.m. The services will be conducted by Frs. Murphy and Mattis. This is our Feast Day! Please plan to attend.

On Saturday, February 19, 2005, we will Celebrate our Feast Day with a Banquet at The Wellington beginning at 6:00 p.m. with honored guests, His Eminence, Metropolitan Alexios and clergy guests from the Tampa Bay area. Dancing will follow the very short celebratory program. No fund raising! It is not too late to obtain your tickets

On Sunday, February 20, His Eminence will conduct the Divine Liturgy. A reception will follow in the Dining Hall so all can meet Metropolitan Alexios. Plan on it!

EPISTLE – Hebrews 13:7-16 (Three Hierarchs)

B

rethren, remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

GOSPEL –  Matthew 5:14-19 (Three Hierarchs)

T

he Lord said to his disciples, "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Communion Hymn instead of “Praise the Lord” sung in Greek “Tous treis megistous”
