THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST

O

n February 2, our Orthodox Church remembers an event in Christ’s life when He was forty days old -“The Presentation of Christ at the Temple.” The Gospel of Luke (2:22-40) tells how Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem to fulfill the requirements of the Jewish law. The first-born son was brought to the Temple where they were to make a sacrifice of two birds. The Old Testament expected that the Messiah was to be a first-born son. So the presenting of the child re-affirmed the expectation of the coming of the redeemer of Israel.

Symeon, a "righteous and devout" old man who had been waiting for the coming of the Messiah, was guided by the Holy Spirit to meet the infant Jesus in the Temple. "It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ" (Luke 2:26). Symeon took "the child Jesus" in his arms and exclaimed, "Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel" (Luke 2:29-32).

Note that the feasts of Christmas (December 25), the Circumcision (January 1) and Epiphany (January 6) celebrate respectively, the Incarnation of Christ, His concrete humanity, and the declaration that He is the Son of God. The feast of the Presentation of Christ declares that He is the awaited Savior. It also shows that Jesus Christ came as the Savior of the whole world. His coming is for "all peoples," both Jews and Gentiles.

The Orthodox Church has adopted this practice so that when a child is born to Orthodox parents, they bring both boys and girls to the church on or near the fortieth day, when a brief “Churching” service is held. It is the first step for the child toward Baptism.

What should our personal response be as Orthodox Christians to this feast? One of the Vesper hymns tells us: "Come, let us also welcome Christ and receive him with divine songs of praise . .  . . Him let us worship!"

The feast of the Presentation of Christ at the Temple is an invitation to conscious and committed faith in Christ, the Savior of the world. Just as Symeon received Christ in his arms, we are called to "also welcome Christ" into all aspects of our lives. Why? Because Jesus Christ "is incarnate for our sakes." He has become our guide to true life. He is above all other things and values. Therefore, "Him let us worship!" As we approach the Feast Day of our parish, let us “welcome Christ” into our hearts and into our midst!

EPISTLE1 Timothy 4:9-15 (32nd Sunday)

T

imothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, attend to the public reading of scripture, to preaching, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophetic utterance when the council of elders laid their hands upon you. Practice these duties, devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress.

GOSPELLuke 19:1-10 (15th Luke - Zaccheus)

A

t that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaios; he was a chief collector, and rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaios, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today." So he made haste and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner." And Zacchaios stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost."
