BOTH “OLD” AND “NEW”
LAST WEEK, January 13, 2002 our parish experienced a sad change in the history of this congregation. Fr. John Liadis, who founded the Olympic Village Camp here in Brooksville 25 years ago and who was responsible for forming our worshiping congregation conducted his concluding Divine Liturgy as the pastor of the Orthodox  community that meets here at St. Nicholas Chapel.
In eloquent words he thanked God, his beloved Presbytera Mary, the faithful congregants and the early members who helped him establish our parish. His words were simple, yet moving. All who received Holy Communion from his hands and the blessed “Antidoron” bread at the end of the Divine Liturgy were moved and touched, feeling gratitude and blessings for the years of faithful service Fr. John and Presbytera Mary have contributed to the development of both Olympic Village and our congregation.
FOLLOWING THE LITURGY we gathered in the community hall for a farewell luncheon in honor of Fr. John and Presbytera Mary. Our Parish Council President, Connie Mourgides introduced Mr. Connie Pappas, one of the earliest members of the congregation, who movingly described the early years with Fr. John and told the full house of his regard and love for Fr. John and all that his ministry meant to him. It was a heartfelt tribute, that was appreciated by all in attendance.
HIS GRACE, BISHOP ALEXIOS of Atlanta has appointed Fr. Stanley S. Harakas, a member of the parish with Presbytera Emily since 1995, to become the new Priest for our “old” and “new” community. We are “old” because we have ten years of continuous history, and we are “new” because we are in the process of forming a parish for the Orthodox people of Hernando County, under the Diocese of Atlanta of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
We pray for God’s blessings on Fr. John and Presbytera Mary. We hope that they will bless us with frequent attendance. Fr. Stanley has already consulted several times with Fr. John and will continue to do so in the future. Many blessings in the years to come!

THE EPISTLE READING  - 2 Corinthians 4:6-15
For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. For while we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, "I believed, and so I spoke," we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
THE GOSPEL READING – Luke 6:17-23
And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us." When he saw them he said to them, "Go and show yourselves to the priests." And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then said Jesus, "Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?" And he said to him, "Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well."

O Euthymios, venerable and glorious father, / you renounced earthly goods / in order to follow Christ, / not preferring passing riches to the eternal treasures. / Populating the desert as a city, / you destroyed armies of demons. / Who would be able to worthily express / the true fervor of your soul for God, / O father all-worthy of our praise.
