TODAY’S VASILOPITA BENEFITS
ST.
BASIL’S ACADEMY
oday,
our St. Katherine Ladies Society invites you to join in the St. Basil
Vasilopita, or “St. Basil’s Sweet-Bread Celebration” to benefit St.
Basil’s Academy. There is no charge, but we ask for free-will donations
to help this important child-care agency of our Archdiocese. What is St.
Basil’s Academy?
Saint
Basil Academy is the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese home away from home for
children in need. Serving as a philanthropic center of the Church, the
purpose of the Academy is to provide a loving Christian environment,
where resident children are nurtured into adulthood. Although children
come to the Academy for various reasons, the resident children are there
because of the inability of a parent of guardian to sufficiently care
for them.
Archbishop, and later, Patriarch Athenagoras dreamed of establishing an
orphanage or children’s home ever since his arrival in the United States
in 1931. The Greek Orthodox Philoptohos Society purchased in 1944 the
Jacob Ruppert estate in Garrison New York, on the shores of the Hudson
River, overlooking West Point Academy with the proceeds of two years of
the Vasilopitta celebrations. The Academy, as envisioned by the late
Patriarch Athenagoras, has expanded in scope to be a well equipped,
licensed Residential Child Care Center, with modern dormitories, a
gymnasium/auditorium, indoor swimming pool, beautiful chapel, library
and all the necessary comforts of a loving home.
The Academy was named for
Saint Basil,
who was the founder of many orphanages, hospitals, and homes for the
elderly in fourth century Caesarea, Asia Minor. He is considered one of
the greatest philanthropists of the Church.
The National Philoptochos has responded to the needs of the Academy
and its resident children for over 60 years, with support of the
operating budget through the Annual Vasilopitta appeal and the
sisterhood of Saint Basil for special needs. Come! Enjoy the
fellowship and help support this worthwhile philanthropic outreach of
our Church!

EPISTLE – Ephesians
4:7-13 (Post-Epiphany)
rethren, grace was given
to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is
said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave
gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he
had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended
is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill
all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some
prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the
saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of
the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the
fullness of Christ.
GOSPEL – Matthew 4:12-17
(Post-Epiphany)
t that time, Jesus heard
that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving
Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of
Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might
be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the
sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in
darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region
and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to
preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
Communion Hymn: The leaders sing in Greek “Epephane e haris.
. .”
(Read) The grace of of God our Savior has appeared to all
peoples. Alleluia.
Post-Communion Hymn: Instead of “We have seen the light . . .”
we sing in Greek "En Iordane vaptizomenou sou")
(Read) At Your Baptism in the Jordan, O Lord, / the worship of
the Trinity was revealed. / For the Father’s voice bore witness to You /
by calling You His Beloved Son, / and the Spirit in the form of a dove /
confirmed the truth of these words. / O Christ God who have appeared to
us / and enlightened the world, / glory to You.
