THE PARISH COUNCIL

T

his past Sunday, January 3, 2010, the members of the 2010 Parish Council placed their hands on the Gospel book, and took their oath of office. It was a solemn moment marking the beginning of a year of committed service to Christ the Savior Church.

All the members of Christ the Savior Church should pay attention to the commitment made by the governing body of our parish. The members affirmed this important Stewardship of parish leadership:

"I do solemnly affirm that I will uphold the dogma, teaching, traditions, holy canons, worship, and moral principles of the Greek Orthodox Church, as well as the constitutional charter, discipline, and regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of  America, and that I will fulfill faithfully and sincerely the duties and obligations required of a member of the Parish Council. So help me God." (Uniform Parish Regulations, Article 9, sec. 4)

This affirmation describes the fundamental attitude that a Parish Council member needs to have to serve in this most responsible position of trust. The first part of the affirmation refers to the belief system, organizational principles and moral teachings of Orthodox Church life. Each Parish Council member commits himself to not only follow the Orthodox Way, but also to work diligently for its fulfillment.

The second part of the affirmation identifies the Parish Council Members with the particular embodiment of the Orthodox Faith in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of  America, its programs and its leadership and support.

The third part of the affirmation made by the Parish Council member is personal. It is a pledge to be a trustworthy, hardworking, responsible leader of the Parish, in whatever assignment is assumed by each member.

This is a great honor, but also a great responsibility. To fulfill these obligations requires much from the member himself or herself, but it can be fulfilled only with the Lord’s grace. So it ends with the words, “So help me God!” We all pray for a successful year.

EPISTLE – Ephesians 4:7-13 (After Theophany)

B

RETHREN, grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men." (in saying, "He ascended," what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-17 (AfterTheophany)

A

t that time, Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
