What’s Special About Christ the Savior Orthodox Church?-8

WHY Do The People Declare a Stewardship of Treasure?

In the previous question, it was pointed out that people who wish to become part of Christ the Savior Church as Stewards (Members) do so by declaring to the Church what they will try to do for the coming calendar year in terms of giving of their “Time and Talent.” They also declare what they hope to donate financially to Christ the Savior Church. This is called a “Stewardship of Treasure.” This Stewardship is also based on the fourth “T” word, “Thanksgiving.” We give financially to the Church out of Thanksgiving for all that God has done for us so as to contribute to the work of His Kingdom.

At the very beginning of the Christian Church, St. Paul raised money from the convert local churches to help the Christians of Jerusalem who were being boycotted by their neighbors. They were in dire financial need. St. Paul made a collection in order to help these first Christians. Writing to the Christians of Corinth, most of whom were Greek and not Jewish, he laid down principles of Christian giving. He wrote:

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

At the basis of our Stewardship of Treasure for each of us is gratitude to God for His blessings to us. The Stewardship of Treasure is a way in which we return a portion of what we have received from God for the work of His Church. But as we see, our giving brings rewards to us -“whoever sows generously will also reap generously,” he tells us. By our Stewardship of Treasure we become, as the Bible says, “co-workers in the Lord’s vineyard,” the Church.

St. Paul also tells us that we ourselves decide what we will give to His Church. Each of us “should give what we have decided in our heart to give.” Our giving should not be forced or a kind of tax. Each of us should give to the Church “not reluctantly or under compulsion.” We are called to give freely and willingly and we are  promised that “God loves a cheerful giver.” God gives us the resources, “His grace abounds” in each Steward of Treasure, so that we are promised that our needs will be met, as we help in His work.

So, we ask each Steward to declare what he or she hopes to give for the year to support the work of Christ the Savior Church. This is right and God-pleasing!

EPISTLE – 1 Corinthians 4:9-16 (10th Matthew) + BRETHREN, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

GOSPEL – Matthew 17:14-23 (10th Matthew) + At that time, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."

July 12, 2007 Building Committee Meeting: A Furnishings Committee was established with John Tsausis as Chair, to plan for new furnishings. It was agreed to move most of our present church furniture to the new church and replace it as donations permitted. The Committee agreed to have two signs made and placed on the Anderson Snow Road property, indicating “Future Home of Christ the Savior Greek Orthodox Church” placed in a “V” form. Arrangements are being made with Mr. Steve Ferriero of E.S.P. Enterprises. It was decided to place a removable map in the Bulletin showing the exact location of the property, which was to be prepared by Paul Cosmadelis. Closing on the sale of the Olympic Village Lane property will be on September 12. After that, we will publicize our plans in the local newspapers.
