The Orthodox Messenger Vol. II, No. 30 – Sunday, August 3, 2003 “A Pan-Orthodox Christian Community” Ecumenical Patriarchate + Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America + Metropolis of Atlanta Services Held at St. Nicholas Chapel, 13460 Olympic Village Lane, Brooksville, FL - (352) 796-8482 Website: http://orthodoxhernandocountyfl.org Fr. Stanley S. Harakas, Protopresbyter – (352) 688-2382; Cell (352) 263-3005; Fax (352) 688-9846; Email: Rharakas@aol.com
On August 1, we began a two week fast period in preparation for the great feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos, the Holy Mother of our Lord. We conducted the first of several Supplicatory Services to the Theotokos. Today, following the Divine Liturgy, we will offer these same prayers for the health and well-being of ourselves and the members of our families, and for all of our Hellenic Orthodox Mission of Hernando County community. An important element in the Dormition Fast is the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord, observed on Wednesday, August 6 with the Orthros at 9:30 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. On Friday, August 8, and again on Sunday, August 10, we will conduct the Supplicatory Service to the Theotokos. On Friday, August 15, the Feast of the Dormition of the TheotokoS, the Orthros will be at 9:30 a.m. and the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m. THE SUPPLICATORY SERVICE (PARAKLESIS) is a service of prayer to the Theotokos to intercede on our behalf to the Lord for health and well-being, spiritual and physical. Enclosed in this week’s bulletin is a “Prayer Sheet” for te 2003 Supplicatory Services. Please fill it out with family first names and hand it to the ushers by the end of the service so that the names can be included in the prayers. Those not in church and receiving the “Prayer Sheet” in the mail should return it directly to Fr. Harakas at 12443 Little Farms Dr., Spring Hill, FL 34609. THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST marks a crucial moment in the life of Christ, when He went up to Mount Tabor in the presence of three of His Disciples and the prophets Moses and Elias, and displayed His Divine Nature in the brightest of light. The voice of the Father was heard, saying “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” You can read about it in the Gospel of Matthew chapter17, verses 1 through 13. THE DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS is about the death of the Virgin Mother of Christ. Tradition tells how the Apostles, except for St. Thomas, arrived at her death-bed in time for her funeral and burial. Later, when St. Thomas arrived, the tomb was opened so he could view her body, but it was not there. There is an ancient tradition that her body was assumed into heaven, so sometimes this feast is called the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Dormition is the major feast of the Theotokos. Kontakion of the Transfiguration of Christ (August 6) “Epi tou orous metemorfothes.” (Read) You were transfigured upon the mount, /O Christ our God, and Your disciples, / in so far as they could bear, / beheld Your glory. / Thus, when they see You crucified, / they may understand Your voluntary passion, / and proclaim to the world / that You are truly the radiance of the Father. Return to a page 26 for “Holy God”and for the Epistle and Gospel Readings EPISTLE – Romans 15:1-7 + Brethren, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of your Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. GOSPEL – Matthew 9:27-35 + At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."
