CHRIST THE SAVIOR – FOR ALL PEOPLE
St. Moses the Ethiopian

Today, August 28 the Orthodox Church commemorates the memory of St. Moses the Ethiopian, sometimes called St. Moses the Black. His life is instructive to us. For the first part of his life, Moses was hardly holy or virtuous. Born in the 4th Century in Ethiopia as a slave, he escaped and lived as a thief. Very large in stature and cruel in character he became the head of a robber band of more than seventy men. One day, while attacking a monastery he was confronted by the abbot, St. Isidore, who treated him with love and peacefulness. This kindness caused Moses to repent and bitterly weep for his sins. He asked St. Isidore to let him stay in the monastery where he learned from his mentor to repent and struggle against his sins.
Slowly, he overcame his bad habits through prayer, fasting, worship, spiritual struggle and the doing of works of love for others. He eventually called the men who used to follow him in crime, to lives of faith in his own monastery. Many people came to find him for spiritual counsel. He always remained fully aware of the sinful life he had abandoned.
Once he was forced to go to another monastery to judge a monk who had sinned grievously.  As he traveled to the monastery, he carried a bucket of water in which he had punched a few small holes. As he walked, he kept repeating, “My sins flow out behind me as this water, but I see them not, and I am come to judge failings which are not mine!” Upon seeing this, the other monks quickly forgave the sinful monk.
At the end of his life he foresaw that brigands would attack and destroy his monastery. He sent all the monks away except for six, and remained there, knowing that they would be martyred. And so, in the year 405 A.D., he died, repeating Christ’s words, “All who take the sword will perish by the sword” (Matthew 26:52), but his martyrdom also teaches us as the Lord says, “Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
St. Moses is, for a church like our Christ the Savior church, an object lesson. He was black skinned and was an example of the broad outreach of our Orthodox Faith that includes people of all backgrounds. As a pan-Orthodox community, we focus on our Orthodox Christian identity and seek to be inclusive as possible. Neither ethnicity, race nor heritage is as important as faith in Christ the Savior and the decision to live as faithful Orthodox Christians. Join us in worship, spiritual life, and service to the Lord.

(Read) By your holy birth-giving, / O pure one, / Joachim and Anna were delivered / from the reproach of barrenness; / and Adam and Eve / were delivered from the corruption of death; / your people celebrate it, / having been saved from the stain of iniquity, / crying out to you, / ‘The barren one gives birth to the Theotokos, / who nourishes our life.

Return to p. 26 of the Hymnal, to sing “Holy God . . . .”

EPISTLE – 1 Corinthians  4:9-16 (10th Matthew) +  Brethren, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the off-scouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me.

GOSPEL – Matthew 17:14-23 (10th Matthew) + At that time, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."

From St. Paul’s Letter

to Titus

“Remind them (the Christians) to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for any honest work, to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all persons. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful.”
