THE DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS

From the Vespers and the Orthros of today’s Feast of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos, we invite you to read and reflect:    THE VESPERS: +“It was right that the eye-witnesses and ministers of the Word should see the Dormition of His mother according to the flesh, even the final mystery concerning her. Thus they might be witnesses not only to the Ascension of the Savior, but also to the Translation of her who gave Him birth. Assembled from all parts by the power of God, they came to Zion, and sped on her way to heaven the Virgin who is higher than the Cherubim. We also venerate her, for she intercedes for our souls.”   +“She who is higher than the heavens and more glorious than the Cherubim, she who is held in greater honor than all creation, she who by reason of surpassing purity became the receiver of the everlasting Essence, today commends her most pure soul into the hands of her Son. With her, all things are filled with joy, and she bestows great mercy on us.”   THE ORTHROS: +“In you the laws of nature are defeated, O undefiled Virgin pure. In virginity childbirth was accomplished, and death introduces life. You, after bearing, are virgin, and after dying are living. Mother of God, ever protect your inheritance.”   +“All you born on earth, with festival lamps in hand, in spirit leap for joy; heavenly spirits of bodiless Angels, celebrate and honor the Dormition of the Mother of God, crying loudly: O rejoice, all-blessed one, ever-virgin and pure, who gave birth to God.”    +“Apostles, you have assembled today from earth’s furthest reaches here in this town of Gesthemane; now, therefore, bury my body. And You, my Son and my God, receive my departing spirit.”    +“You are supremely blessed, O Virgin Theotokos, For through Him who from you became incarnate, was Hades taken prisoner, and Adam has been summoned back, and the curse has been neutralized, and Eve has been liberated; Death has been put to death, and we have been brought to life. Therefore extolling, we cry out: O Christ our God, You are blessed, for so was Your good pleasure. Glory to You!”

Service hours: Sundays and Feast days: Orthros at 9:30 am; Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am.

Kontakion of the Dormition

(Read) The Theotokos, / unsleeping in intercession / and the immovable hope of protection, / could not be retained by any tomb or death. / For being Life’s own Mother, she was transferred to life by Him, / who dwelt in the ever-virgin womb.

EPISTLE –  Philippians 2:5-11 (for the Dormition) +  Brethren, have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

GOSPELLuke 10:38-42, 11:27-28 (for the Dormition)At that time, Jesus entered a village; and a woman called Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving; and she went to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve you alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her." As he said this, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that you sucked!" But he said, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

In the place of “Axion Esti”
the Leaders sing “Ai geneai pasai . . . Nenikintai physeos.”
Translation: In you the laws of nature are defeated, O undefiled Virgin pure. In virginity childhood was accomplished, and death introduces life. You after bearing, are virgin, and after dying are living. Mother of God, protect your inheritance.

In the place of the Communion Hymn
“Praise the Lord” – “Aineite”  Hymnal 66-67,
 (Sing)  “Poterion Soteriou” /
