PALM SUNDAY

G

od’s plan for the salvation of humanity was a long-term one. When the fullness of the time had come, God the Father sent forth His Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, to take on human nature –body and soul- through the Blessed Theotokos.

As Jesus the child grew, he manifested his Divine-Human nature in the dialogue with the elders in the Temple. He began His saving work, by teaching the people, healing the sick, and guiding His Disciples and followers. He challenged the religious leaders for their hypocritical formality and taught all who would hear that good external behavior and good inner dispositions should be in harmony.

His mission came to its culmination with His Holy Passion. It began with His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. This event proclaimed in a powerful way that He was the awaited Messiah, the spiritual King of Israel. The Orthros for Palm Sunday describes it this way: “And when the great multitude heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they immediately took palm branches in their hands and went out to meet him. Some even spread their clothes in the road which he was about to traverse, and some cut down branches from the trees and strewed the road therewith. And those who went before him, and those who followed, even the children, were all crying, Hosanna, blessed is he that comes in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel (John 12:13).”

What meaning does this have for us today? Above all, the triumphal entrance into Jerusalem by Jesus was an event that led to the Life-giving Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ for the salvation of the world. But, also, as Christ tamed the unruly donkey, we need to learn to tame our sinful desires, so that we too, might travel the road that leads to our personal victory over death, sin and evil – making Christ’s Resurrection our own!

One of the hymns of this feast has us say, “O Christ God, when we were buried with You in Baptism, we became deserving of Your Resurrection to immortal life. Wherefore, we praise You, crying ‘Hosanna in the highest, blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

EPISTLE - Philippians 4:4-9 (Palm Sunday)

B

rethren, rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do; and the God of peace will be with you.

GOSPEL - John 12:1-18 (Palm Sunday)

S

ix days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazaros was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazaros was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me."  When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazaros, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazaros also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, "Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt!" His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazaros out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign.

In the place of “Axion Estin” the leaders sing “Theos Kyrios . . . systisate eorten”

In the place of  the Communion Hymn “Praise the Lord” the Leaders sing “Evlogemenos o erchomenos” (Read) “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, Save us O Son of God, the King of Israel.”

In the place of “Blessed be the name of the Lord ” the Leaders sing “Ten Koinen Anastasin.”

(Read) To confirm the general resurrection / before Your Passion, / You resurrected Lazarus from the dead, / O Christ our God. / therefore imitating the children, / carrying the symbols of victory, / we cry out to You the Victor over death: / Hosanna in the highest! / Blessed are You, / the One, who comes in the name of the Lord.
