ORTHODOX Students Trade Beaches and Parties for
Countless Life-Changing Experiences

O

ver 75  students choose Orthodox Christian Fellowship's (OCF) Real Break as an alter-native to the traditional spring break of parties and beaches. The seven  teams served com-munities in need, in exchange for life-changing experiences.  This year Real Break returned to many of 2004 locations: Hogar Rafael Ayau  Orphanage in Guatemala, Project Mexico, St.John Orthodox Cathedral, Eagle  River, Alaska, Petras Monastery in Karditsa, Greece. An addi-tional location this  year was a Special Education Orphanage in El Salvador, Central  America.
The Real Break team  made desperately needed renovations to several rooms and buildings at the St.  Martin Special Education Center in El Salvador which houses over 100 mentally  and physically handicapped orphans. In Karditsa, Greece, our Real Break team was  able to help on the construction of a new church, multiple service projects in  the community and became immersed in the vibrant Orthodoxy of the monasteries  and communities they
visited. Far from warm beaches, our Real Break Alaska team  helped communities around St. John Orthodox Cathedral in Eagle River- this included aiding with the distribution of donations with the Salvation Army and  maintenance of a halfway house hosted by Covenant House. Returning for our 6th  year to Project Mexico, two teams labored on the ranch and
completed stucco work  on newly built homes in the surrounding colonía. The teams were also blessed to  interact with the 18 boys at St. Innocent's Orphanage. Two teams were also sent  to Hogar Rafael Ayau in Guatemala to renovate and paint several rooms and to  love and care for some of the 150 children that call the orphanage  home.
Each Real Break  gives participants the opportunity to answer Christ's call to serve others,  additionally the break provides the unexpected reward of serving themselves by  growing spiritually and continuing their journey to salvation. A participant  from the University of Miami OCF shared this story of his first morning at the  Hogar Rafael Ayau Orphanage, "a small boy, about the age of 6, ran up to two of  the members from our group and gave them a hug. He walked them to the church and  we sat in one of the pews talking and playing with this boy. What love that boy  had! Not knowing us and seeing us for the first time, he, with-out hesitation,  acted as though we were his family." This Real Break experience leads many to make the same realization this participant made, "By God's grace, I experienced  things that have penetrated my heart and opened my eyes to many  things."

Note: Christ the Savior Stewards will remember the “Real Break” visit last year to our church from the Orthodox College Fellowship from the University of Illinois. The work continues!

EPISTLE - Hebrews 6:13-20  (4th Sunday of Lent)

B

rethren, when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore to himself, saying, "Surely I will bless you and multiply you." And thus Abraham, having patiently endured, obtained the promise. Men indeed swear by a greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he interposed with an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God should prove false, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner shrine behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.

GOSPEL - Mark 9:17-31 (4th Sunday of Lent)

A

t that time, a man came to Jesus kneeling and saying: "Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able." And he answered them, "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked his father, "How long has he had this?" And he said, "From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us." And Jesus said to him, "If you can! All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You dumb and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again." And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse; so that most of them said, "He is dead." But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, "Why could we not cast it out?" And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting." They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, "The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise."

FROM THE STATEMENT OF OUR ARCHDIOCESE on the death of Pope John Paul II: “We participate in the sorrow of the Roman Catholic Church during this difficult time of the departure of Pope John Paul II, and we join the world in offering prayers knowing that he is now in the world of eternal rest. During the tenure of Pope John Paul II, the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church has improved significantly. We, as Orthodox Christians, will always remember, among other instances, this expression of a desire for reconciliation and unity as we pray for the repose of his soul.”
